Best Foods for Crohn's and Colitis diet tips Part-1 Salmon. 

This is part of our super food series for Crohn's and Colitis patients. I was initially going to cover 10 foods in one article but there is so much information to cover that if I cover them all here you will in all likelihood fall asleep before you finish reading. As I always try to reinforce I am not advocating these foods or diets as a cure but merely as a way to increase your energy levels, possibly reduce your inflammation levels and hopefully give you some ideas for meal times. 

Salmon:

Salmon is a must for any Crohn's and Colitis patients. If I could pick one food that has to end up in my shopping basket every week its salmon. Even though I am not a huge lover of fish the health benefits are such that I make sure I eat it at least twice a week

1: Salmon is packed with protein. If you are trying to get back to exercise its awesome as a recovery food to help those muscles recover or as a pre workout lunch to get you through gym time.

2: Its high in Vitamin B. If you want your food high in vitamin B look no further. Salmon is about as good as it gets

  • Vitamin B1 (thiamin): 18% of the RDI
  • Vitamin B2 (riboflavin): 29% of the RDI
  • Vitamin B3 (niacin): 50% of the RDI
  • Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid): 19% of the RDI
  • Vitamin B6: 47% of the RDI
  • Vitamin B9 (folic acid): 7% of the RDI
  • Vitamin B12: 51% of the RDI

3: It can help reduce anxiety and depression. Salmon is full of Omega 3 essential fatty acids, and are thought to contribute to healthy brain function. As a bonus the Omega 3 fatty acids are also good for joint and heart care.

In a 2015 study published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health high fish consumption was associated with a 20 percent lower risk of depression in men, and 16 percent lower risk in women. **Link to published study**

In general you should try to eat fish at least twice a week as eating fish is considered to be extremely beneficial to your general health and is also thought to protect against the likes of Alzheimer's disease , asthma, depression, diabetes, high blood pressure, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis to name but a few

However if your pregnant or breastfeeding you should avoid eating salmon or other fatty fish more than twice a week **NSW Food Authority Guidelines**

Some substitutes you could try if salmon is not your thing or as an alternate if you fancy a change.

Wild Trout or Sea Trout, Mackerel or Bass
